Reflections from the UN Ocean Conference 2025: INTOSAI WGEA Bulletin and Ocean Commitment

17.06.2025

On 9–13 June, the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference took place in Nice, France, to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 14. The theme of the Conference was “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”.

Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference, the INTOSAI WGEA published a bulletin compiling recent audits on marine topics that SAIs have submitted to the WGEA audit database. These audits demonstrate connections to several targets under the SDG 14 - Life Below Water, such as marine pollution (SDG 14.1), protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems and areas (SDG 14.2 and SDG 14.5), and overfishing (SDG 14.4). You can read the bulletin here.

The outcome of the UN Ocean Conference, Nice Ocean Action Plan, comprises a political declaration and over 800 voluntary commitments by governments, scientists, UN agencies, and civil society since the previous conference. The INTOSAI WGEA is proud to be one of the organisations to make their own Ocean Commitment! You can access it here.

The UN Ocean Conference served as good preparation for the INTOSAI WGEA Assembly to be held in Malta in 1–3 July, continuing with the marine theme of “Auditing our Blue Planet”. We look forward to continuing these valuable discussions in Malta!
